The Nike + Sportband 2, is geared more towards running (pace/distance/calories burned). For fitness class activities, it would require full motion in an upright position and raising your arms above your hips.

Nike + shoes have a recessed cavity in the midsole to store the sensor unit shipped along with the Nike + Sportband 2 which gathers important data. The spot where the sensor sits seems to have less material in that area on the outsole. I would imagine this design is purposeful to allow the sensor to capture more detailed information. I can't say for sure whether this product would work in other branded shoes. I can say the product would work best in the Nike + shoes that were intended to house the sensor unit.

By the description of the Sport Kit off of the vendor's website, I would say yes, the Nike + Sportband 2 does provide constant feedback of your performance, including your pace.
From vendor's site:
The sensor measures your pace, distance, time elapsed and calories burned. This information is transmitted wirelessly to the receiver and your Nike+ tracking device for real-time feedback while you train.

You would get best results with the Nike + Sportband 2 if used for running. I would recommend checking out the vendor's website tho for more specific information on how you can utilize the data you receive from the sensor. Maybe with some calculations you could incorporate the device into your basketball game.

The Nike + Sportband 2 can be immersed in one meter of water for 30 minutes. You can wear it to run in the rain, but don’t swim in it. Water damage may occur if the buttons are pressed underwater. Hot steam may cause damage to the product. Do not wear in steaming shower, spa or hot tub. Product should be rinsed thoroughly in fresh water after being exposed to salt water.

The Nike + Sportband 2 is only compatible with a Nike plus ready shoe. The Sportband includes a sensor that is needed to place inside of that shoe. Look for shoes that list as 'Nike +' and these will have the compartment the sensor fits into.

You do not need an ipod to use the band. The band records data from the sensor in your shoe (the ipod is what originally recorded data from your shoe). Technically, you don't even need a nike plus compatible shoe because they make a pouch to attach to your shoelaces on shoes that are not nike plus compatible (this pouch is not made by nike, of course).

As packaged, you have to have a nike plus compatible shoe. However, you can buy a pouch that is made for the sensor to attach to the shoelaces of any brand or type of shoe. This pouch is not made by nike, though.
