It would be too difficult for me to speculate on the correct size by just using your son's age. It really will depend on his body type. Some 10 yr olds are big for their age, some are small. My best advice would be to use the size guide offered online for the youth Eastbay EVAPOR Compression Short to figure how the Small might fit on him. Using the waist dimension would be the best guide.
