The Omni-Lite 7mm Xmas Tree Spikes would be a good universal length. Although based on personal preference in the end, most track participants will use the longer length spikes for the jumping events, and use the shorter sized christmas tree shaped pins for sprints and mid-distance racing. Here is a general chart that will give an idea of the lengths and what events they are used in:
50m-400m______christmas tree design 1/8", 3/16", 1/4" (3, 5, or 7mm)
800m-1500m____christmas tree or pyramid design 1/4" (7mm)
3,000-10,000m__pyramid design 3/16" (5mm)
pole vault______christmas tree or pyramid design 1/4" (7mm)
javelin_________pyramid design 1/4"-1/2" (7-13mm)
high jump______pyramid design 1/4"-3/8" (7-9mm)
long jump______pyramid design 1/4" (7mm)
triple jump_____pyramid design 1/4" (7mm)
The christmas tree spikes were designed to compress the surface to give back energy to the runner using the return the reaction force and they also reduce wear on the track. Both the needle and the pyramid pin style are designed to penetrate the track surface to derive traction.
