The men's Nike MayFly is a minimalistic shoe that uses the least amount of material possible in the construction. Two reasons...keep the weight down and also the price. The distance you use the shoe for is entirely up to you and your comfort level. I have some runners who will use this shoe until it shreds...literally. The shoe should last for most at least 60 miles, which is still about 97000 meters. So a person could get in quite a few 3000m runs.

The men's Nike MayFly shoe has a minimalistic design, which essentially means it is made with the least amount of materials possible. So this design may not be the best choice for someone who is looking for a more durable, comfortable shoe for trail running and such.

Question

Would this be good just for recreational use?

Would these be good as an everyday shoe? Just to wear and walk around in? Also, does the 96 miles (100 kilometer) rule apply to the shoe when used for hard running as opposed to recreational use?

Actually, although in the end it is your personal preference whether to race these shoes for shorter distances, the men's Nike MayFly spike is considered a "racing flat", which is a lightweight athletic shoe designed for long distance track & field, cross country, and most often, road races. The flats differ from regular spikes for a few reasons: they lack a substantial heel, they have no holes for metal pins in the shoe, and flats do not have a particularly aggressive tread. The idea of making the racer with minimalistic materials benefits the runner with a very lightweight shoe. Thus the reason they are more designed for long distance racing. You can do a simple search on the website by using keywords "Sprint Spikes". This will offer you better choices for a shoe made for distances of 100-400m.

The Nike Mayfly is a minimalist racing shoe designed for the runner who has speed in mind. Although it doesn't last as long as other track shoes, the 4.0oz Nike Mayfly is one of the lightest track shoes. It would work for sprints or distance running.

This question is hard for me to answer since I do not really know how big your orthotics are, and I do not know your size of shoe. So, I took a couple measurements for a size 08.5 in hopes this information will help you decide.
The insole for the men's Nike MayFly shoe is not removable, unless you choose to just tear it out. The width of the insole at the widest point is 4", while the height of actual fabric from the top of the outsole to the top of the upper is approximately 1 3/4".

Unless if you intend to run under 5min mile pace these should do the job. There is better out there, but the mayflys are still good just not under really fast conditions.

Yes, they can be used for 5ks, but under really fast conditions they seem to not take on final sprints well though. Kinda like driving in a high gear with out the abilaty to drop a gear or 2 to speed up in the end. But they work well. My fasted 5k in them is 16:13.

That is worse case senario. I know people who have made theirs last up to 300 miles. But there is the risk of it litteraly falling apart in a race if it is beat up badly. But as long as they arnt put through sub 5min mile conditions they should be fine.

The Nike MayFly is only designed to last approximately 100 kilometers. It cannot be worn much further than that due to the fact that the outsole foam will wear down considerably. You will have lost the support.
